Canada’s Capital Region – The National Capital Commission (NCC) congratulates the five finalist design teams recently selected by the Canadian Navy Monument Jury to create concepts for a new naval monument at Richmond Landing, in the core of Canada’s Capital. The monument, which will mark one hundred years of service of the Canadian Navy, will be a symbolic tribute commemorating the sacrifices and celebrating the contribution of the men and women of the Canadian Navy.
Design teams from across the country submitted their qualifications and examples of prior work in the first stage of a two-phase design competition. The jury, formed of internationally renowned art and design professionals and a representative from the Canadian Navy, selected five design teams composed of, at minimum, an artist and a landscape architect or architect.
The five finalists are:
- Team Charney – Quebec: Melvin Charney, Nicole Valois, Peter Soland, Jacques Chartrand and Axel Morgenthaler;
- Team Hilton Moore – Ontario: Marlene Hilton Moore, Calvin Brook, Lawrence O’Hearn and J. David Bowick;
- Team Leinster – Ontario: David Leinster, Allan Harding MacKay and Mike Tocher;
- Team McWilliams – British Columbia: Al McWilliams, Joost Bakker and Bruce Haden; and,
- Team Pearl – Ontario: David Pearl and Ian Dance.
These teams will spend the next few months creating a design concept to be presented to the Canadian Navy Monument Jury on October 1, 2009.
The NCC and the Canadian Navy are pleased to work together on this project that will result in the creation of a significant monument in Canada’s Capital Region and a new public gathering place where events of national scope will be held.
The unveiling of the new monument is planned for May 2011.
